My informant told me they use a lot of prayers, in fact a kind of ritual. But he had no superstitions about these. Those who were the repositories of the secrets at the beginning he says wanted, as is the custom in all ages and nations, to envelop them and themselves in mysterious awe, and so enhance--after a tendency so dear to the heart--their own reputation and thus their power for Good or Evil among their credulous neighbours.
