- There was a school in an old barn belonging to John Harte in Cross East.
There was only one teacher in. His name was Mr Jennings. He lived in an old house in Cross East. The scholars used to bring him a penny a week for his pay. English that was taught to the scholars. Books like we have now they had in the old school. They wrote on slates. Stones the scholars had for seats. There were no blackboards.
