- Before the Gortjordan school was built the people went to Cross and Kilmaine schools. There was a man named Micky Burke teaching in Islandmore. He came from "cruac-cosán" near Cill. He belonged to the Fenian movement and was spied on. He was whipped til the flesh fell off him.He was near dead and to keep him going the people paid sixpence a week to him. The people of Islandmore kept him and fed him a few nights an their turn.
