    Two famous hedge school masters that lived in this parish were Jennings and Mélia. Mr. Mélia had a hedge school at Robinson crossroads in Carton. Mr. Jennings taught in the village of Raith he had an old hedge school where Patrick Glavey the blacksmith has his forge. In later times he had a better one down near Dowds of Raith. My father said he remembered the names of two other teachers one called Paddy Murphy and the other Mr. Tunny. Mr. Tunny had a little school over in Doogary. Jennings that taught in Rath used to wear a frock and a tweed trousers his hair was partly grey. He taught both English Irish and Catechism it is said that one day when teaching catechism Jennings asked what is Penance. The boy whom he asked answered "Get a stick and wallop Jennings
