Round on the side walls and projecting about four inches outward was a line of flagstones, This made the part to be thatched all the less and there was less danger to the roof from strong gables.
The kitchen was generally a very large room. In the lower end of it were kept the cattle. There was a regular drain for their droppings and over them was often a loft for the domestic fowls. At a later stage when people built out offices for the cattle and fowls this part of the kitchen was partioned off and made into "the room below".
