at night you had to be careful or you'd be found floundering in the rampar.
Where building stones were scarce the houses was often a "mud wall" one. The walls were made of a kind of cement made of clay (dóib) well worked up with water and cut straw or heather (fraoch) mixed for causistency. This was poured into a frame just as modern concrete house are built. The "mud wall" house when nicely limewashed was supposed to be very warm and comfortable.
