Clarke and his companions got into a cellar and drank whiskey until Clarke was drunk. Next morning Clarke was found asleep in the cellar; the key of the cellar was found in his pocket so he was sentenced to be hanged.
The cart was arranged for the hanging and the rope was round his neck when a man in the crowd who had come to see the hanging said it was not right to hang him without having a cap on his eyes. Someone went to get a cap but Clarke said he had one in his own pocket. His hands were released to get the cap. As soon as it was put on his head he rose into the air, the man who had spoken from the crowd joined him - he was one of the company who had been drinking in the cellar - and they were back in the High Fort in Killedan in an instant.
Before his death he told his sister he would soon die. He said he'd go away but she would not let him. 'Well' said he 'the one who will mind me will have no trouble'. He was seven weeks in bed without taking food. He never once left the bed during this time and when he died the bed-clothes were as clean as on the day he took to the bed."
