- Local FairsI had a talk wit Mrs Morley of Curryane Swinford aged eighty years. She was telling me about local fairs. She said there used to be a fair held a mile from Kilkelly called Ballina Costello. This was held in a wide field and it was very convenient for the people. It was held four times in the year in December, February, May and August. It was discontinued about fifteen years ago. It was the shopkeepers of Kilkelly who were the cause of this as they wanted to have all the trade to themselves.There is a fair held in Swinford the first Wednesday of every month on the streets, but this is only with fifteen years, before that there were only five fairs one in January, April, May, August, December. At the present day calf jobbers Mr. Byrne and Mr. Duffy both of Kilkelly go around to the farmers houses and buy young calves a month or six weeks old. When the people in olden times made a bargain in selling animals it was known to be(continues on next page)
