- Long ago in Ireland flax was raised plentifully by the consent of the English Landlords.
There lived about a quarter of a mile from the town of Swinford a landlord named Major Brabazon. He had acres of land sown with flax. When the flax was ready for reaping it was cut with hooks. The girls of Kilbride and Cullane and the neighboring villages used to work at it for the big wage of 6d per day and were glad to get that.
When the flax was cut it was tied in sheaves and put into a trench or drain, usually in the bog. Here it was left for about three weeks till it was well(continues on next page)- Collector
