  1. Dick Barrett was born in Carne about the year 1740. He was a school teacher for some years. He wrote a lot of poems both in Irish and in English. Dick Barrett was married twice and he had a son and a daughter. He was also a member of the United Irishmen and for this he was arrested and imprisoned in Castlebar jail for three months. Eoghan Cóir, the best known of Dick Barrett's songs, was a favourite song of Archbishop McHales. Dick Barrett's house at Carne was one of the neatest cottages ever seen. He composed Bean an Fhir Ruadh, Seamus O'Lynsky, Preab 'san ól, Eoghan Cóir, and a lot of other poems.
