tied by the neck as tying by the horns is not recommended. It wears the horns at the base and gives the animals an old appearance.
Calves when young are first tied by a fore leg as they get older. They are tied by the neck but where there is ample room calves are not tied at all. Long ago tyings were made of straw ropes several straws platted and were quite safe. The cows here in the west mostly have no horns. Some say a side lang is a tying from the fore to hind leg as a restraint when there is a particular wandering animal. Tying the two front feet together for the same reason is usually done to horses. It is called spancel.
