- There are three forges in this parish. The smiths are James Mc-Hugh, Pat Clarke, and Michael Walsh. Some of those smiths have learned the trade from their fathers.
One of the forges is at the end of Ballycastle, another in the centre and one in Domrick Street. All the forges are near cross-roads but one.
The forge resembles a cottage. There is a thatched roof on it. There is a horse-shoe on every forge door. There is one fireplace in the centre of the forge.
There is a bellows in every forge near the fireplace. Every smith has a hammer a sledge a rasp and an anvil.
The smiths do not make ploughs or spades or shovels nowadays but the mend them. Some of the forge-work is done in the open-air. The sparks which fly from the red iron burn the smith's hands and those black spots can be seen in every smith's hands. ... People say(continues on next page)- Collector
