- Long ago there were two grinding mills in this district. There was one where Mr. John Birrane lives at present. In the village of Lecarrowaddy, in the parish of Maygownagh, and in the County of Mayo, and there was another one in the place which is now occupied by Mr. George Moore. The people would grind it also with querns, but they would have to sieve it before use. Then they would make oatmeal cakes, They put hot water in it instead of milk. Then they baked it on the gridiron, and sometimes on a hot flag beside the fire. When people would be going on long journeys they would bring oatmeal cakes with them.
