- Long ago there was a workhouse in Ardnaree. It was built in the Croquet field. It fell into disuse the time of the Famine. There was a large number of people brought there the time of the Famine. There was also a large number of people buried round it. The old workhouse that is now knocked down on the Crossmolina Road was at that time a military barrack and when the soldiers left the town it was changed into a workhouse.(continues on next page)
