- The first Public Service between Ballina and Belmullet was started about 1898 by a long car drawn by two horses and called the Bianconi.. They had two stages at which to change their horses one at Dooleague and one at Bangor Erris. About the year 1902 a company set up in opposition; and the public called i the Opposition. Car. This went on for some time cutting prices against other until about 1910 when a Motor service was started by an English-man named Edwards, some of the people who interested in the horse-drawn cars were not pleased with the motor cars. They lifted a small bridge at Coolturk with intention of breaking up the Car and only for some man who was travelling early in the morning to Crossmolina and stopped the motor car and told them that the bridge was lifted, there probably would have been a very bad accident.
