- There are two methods of putting on thatch.
Scallop thatching and hand thatching.
The former is the best and is usually put on dwelling houses.
When well done it is perfectly water proof and is very neat and snug looking.
The straw is first "drawn" that is it is stretched and all the short and broken bits discarded.
It is then put on in "streaks" about two feet wide, and bound to the roof with "scalops," and in some exposed districts it is sewed to the timber with strong cord.
Hand thatching is much simpler and not so durable(continues on next page)- Collector
