    a coffin which was made by the local carpenter. Often the coffin was made at the home of the deceased by a few neighbours who had some idea of carpentry. At the time the body was being coffined all the relatives gathered around and did a few rounds of crying.
    Now the coffin was placed as a rule, on a horse and cart or horse car, and the nearest relative sat along-side the coffin. Some who attended the funeral had their carts to carry them, but the greater part walked the whole journey.
    At the graveside the relatives of the deceased used often open the grave and often the neighbour opened it. As the work was supposed to be
