- There was once a man named Pat Sheridan. He lived in Letterkeeghaun about fifty years ago. He was the best thatcher in this district. He used to go down to Crossmolina every winter and thatch all the thatched houses that were in the town. He also went through the country any place he was asked. He charged a half-crown a day. It used to take him a week to finish a house. The way he thatched was to do a stripe about two feet wide until he reached the top of the house. Then he got small bits of sticks called "scolbs". These he puts in the thatch to hold it in its place. That is the way he thatched a [?] until it would be finished. That is not the way people thatch now.(continues on next page)
