- The herbs that grow in my village are mountain sedge, chickenweed, sorrel, garlic and cluanach dearg.
Some of them do harm to crops. The cluanach dearg grows up very high and strong and smothers potatoes. If a person rubbed it to his eyes it would blind him. A long time ago a boy named John Loftus rubbed it to his eyes, and it blinded him and was blind for the remainder of his life.
Mountain sedge is not very plenty. It grows in poor land. It always grows on ditches. People pull it and boil it and drink the juice. It banishes coughs.
Chickenweed is used for swollen hands or feet. It takes the swelling out of them.
Sorrel is used with colour or dyes for dying clothes. It grows in any sort of land.
