Stalks grew in abundants but on account of them being too close to each other, the stalk-plants were thinned out and a fresh bed prepared then the other stalks were placed here. The distance between each stalk was about nine inches. The following year there was a fairly good supply of potatoes, bu the people were forced to cut the eyes out of each potatoe and save them for seed. The remainder of the potatoes was used for food. Many deaths took place at this time owing to hunger and black fever.
