- These were sticks of plain wood about two feet long and one inch thick used by employers for keeping account of wages and of the day's labour.On this was placed for a full day's labour a mark thus X and for a half day's labour a mark thus IThe employer held one, marked, and the employee a corresponding one. The marks were compared when they were squaring accounts and paying.Sticks were called scóir-ghearra. These ceased to exist about sixty years ago, in most parts of the country.Mr G. Hodnett
