   were made of clay. There was a bed in the kitchen near the wall. They called it a settle. The fireplace was near the wall in some of the houses and in the middle of the floor in others. They used turf in the fire. There was only one door in every house and a half-door. There were one or two windows in every house and they were very tiny. There was a clay floor in every house. Candles they used for light. They made them themselves out of rushes and goats fat.

   The houses of long ago were thatched with straw and heather. There was only one room in some of the houses. The floor and the chimney and the walls were made of clay.
   They cut animals hair and mixed it through the clay to make it tough and when
