    it is taken to the back where it is covered and the vessel is turned upside down in the yard and left there for some time.

    In the olden days they usen't bring the corpse to the church but at the Dead Mass in the house the priest used to bless clay brought from the garden.
    This was taken to the graveyard with the funeral and thrown into the grave, directly before and after the corpse was lowered into the grave.
    The priest never attended funeral in those days.
