- Long ago the children used not wear any shoes until they were three or four year. There was only one man in this parish who used not wear shoes. His name was "Martin Whelan" know as "Martin the Scallops". His feet were so hard that he often filled a loat of furze without thorns going through his legs. He was killed near Waterford City by an electric wire. Only about half the chidren going to shchool go barfoots bare-footed now. The people long ago used wear their shoes once a week.
