many of these roads are still called lanes, for instance Folkstown Lane, Potato Hill Lane and Stephenstown Lane.
This would be due to the fact that they were narrow and badly kept, but latterly since the county council has taken nearly all the roadways over a great improvement is noticeable in the condition of the roads. The back roads may be no longer termed lanes. There is another fine road starting from Chapel St and goes Westwards for some five miles. We call it the Nail road as it takes us to the village of Naul and has branch roads at different points leading to Dermotstown, Barcelona and Hazardstown. At some of those crossroads an old Irish custom still prevails of having dances at evening time especially on Sundays.- Collector
