- There are very few districts which have the pleasure of saying that the notorious Major Sirr, captor of Lord Edward Fitzgerald and one time chief of the Dublin Police, ever visited them. Well Glasthule is one of those districts. It was in the yr. 1789 when the East and West Piers were being, built, and trucks were laid for the conveyance of granite from Killiney to Dun-Laoghiare, Major Sirr came to inspect the district. He was walking along the tracks when round the bend came some waggons. He did not see them as he was walking in the same direction. The driver saw the major and applied the brakes, but by sudden application of the brakes the waggons were thrown off the tracks. Much time was lost in(continues on next page)
