    Long ago a man lived in a labourer's cottage. He thought to himself that it was a poor thing to be living alone and he got married to a fine wife.

Johnny took a near cut through the bog. When he thought of Mollie telling him to be home early he crossed hedges and drains until he came to the middle of a bog and there he saw a flat stone and he sat down on it to rest himself and smoke. He was no time sitting until a big gander flew down beside him. He was wondered at the gander coming so near him. “Good night Johnny” said the gander. “I never thought geese could talk” said Johnny. “Oh didn’t you often hear us gabbing together” said the gander. “What do you want me to do” says Johnny. “That goose that was played in that house tonight was with me all harvest until the wild geese went up and she fell in fashion with the gander and left me. “What can I do” said Johnny “I didn’t win her”. “I know you didn’t” said the gander “but she will be played in another house again go and win her and
