- Long ago there lived an old man and an old woman. They had one son and his name was Jack. They were very poor so one day Jack said he would go to seek his fortune. His father had nothing to give him only a darning needle. He gave him the needle and told him to go to his four rich uncles and whatever they would give him to stick the needle in on one side of it and out on the other.Jack went to the first uncle and he gave him a lovely big black horse. He stuck the darning needle in on one eye and out on the other and blinded the horse.He got on the horse’s back and went to the next uncle. He gave him a goose, so Jack stuck the needle in the goose’s leg. Then he put a cord in its leg and tied it to the horse’s tail she flapped along after the horse until her leg was broken.After this he went to the next uncle who gave him a pig. He tied the pig to the goose’s sound leg and choked the pig and broke the goose’s leg.The fourth uncle told Jack to leave all these damaged things behind and that he would give him one of the best oxen he owned. Jack agreed. He left all the damaged things and took the ox.Some distance away there lived a(continues on next page)
