The Jew went along being very glad to get a drink without having to pay for it. They went into the first bar the man had been in and when the drink was put before them the Kilcar man said "Do you twig the old hat". The bar keeper at once handed him his change. At the second beer shop the same thing took place.
When they came out from the second shop the Jew asked how it was the man could get anything he wanted by the hat.
The man replied that the hat had earned him many a pound.
The Jew said "If you go into another shop and do the same I will give you five hundred pounds for the hat".
They went into the third beer shop got the drink and the Kilcar man said "Do you twig the old hat" and at once the change was handed over. When they came out the Jew offered five hundred pounds for the hat but the owner said he would not take anything less than ten hundred.
