  1. On an island in Gartan Lough stood a castle in old times. In this castle Godfrey O'Donnell lay wounded after a battle fought near Sligo. He rose from his bed and was borne by his clan towards Letterkenny. Here he died fighting the O'Neills. This castle was pulled down to build Lough Veagh House.
No heir was ever born in Lough Veagh House, and for the reason above stated.
