- Most of the vessels that were used in olden times were made of wood. The pails that were used for carrying water were called stoaps. The vessels that they used for drinking were called noggin's the were little things like tubs with a handle on each and this is what they drank out of. There were larger wooden vessels and they were called piggins they used these vessels for milking the cows.
