- The School in which James Hannigan teached was at Carnshanagh. He lived down in the house in which Mrs McElhinney lives now. In those days they used slates and they spoke no Irish at all. They learned to do sums, to parse, write, read, poetry and Catchism. The Parish priest was then Father Connolly. There were inspectors also. Every three weeks each pupil had to take three pence or sometimes they had to bring three or four turf in their hands. In Fahan Catholic Church there is a tomb-stone of James Hannigan and on it is the date of the year he died. He died in the year 1877
