    Dunree is situated in the Parish of Desertegney about eight miles north of Buncrana. According to the A.A. road-signs, the Irish name for Dunree is Dun-Riogh, meaning "the fort of the King", which is singularly appropriate under the circumstances. Local opinion however, is inclined to discount this appellation by interpreting the name as Dun-Fraoighe, "the fort of the heath.
    Early in 1813 further Batteries were constructed each being manned by a master-gunner and five men. One was built on Inch Island presumably to guard the narrow waterway towards Letterkenny and Ramelton, another was set up a Muckamish, near Rathmullan, on the left shore; and a third was
