    erected at Naiads Point, about two miles north of Buncrana.
    Sir William Agustus Smith is credited with carrying out the construction of these early defence works. He was assistant-engineer of the Lough Swilly military district during the period in which the batteries were erected. He is buried in the graveyard attached to the Protestant Church at Buncrana, where his tombstone reads:
    "Sacred to the memory of Sir Wm. Agustus Smith, K.T., who departed this life on the 18th January 1827. Aged 80years" He was born in London, and served as a captain in the Essex Fencibles for 35 years, and acted as assistant-engineer of the Lough Swilly district, during which
