    period the towers and batteries on Lough Swilly and Lough Foyle were constructed".
    What was termed the Lough Swilly Fortification Scheme however, was first launched in January 1894 when a squad of sappers under the command of Captain St. John, Royal Engineers, was quartered in Buncrana. Improvement work began on the existent defences, and a site eventually chosen for the erection of a new fort at the north end of Lenan Bay which would guard the outer entrance to the Lough.
