- Oat bread, potato cake, and flour bread were the kinds of bread made in olden times. Wheat and corn were ground into flour locally and then made into bread. Oatmeal and boiling water were used when making oatbread. The oatmeal and boiling water were mixed together on a bakeboard and then rolled out with a rolling pin and left in front of the fire to harden. The potato cake was made out of boiled potatoes and flour mixed together on a bakeboard and then rolled out with a rolling pin and put on a frying pan or griddle on top of the fire. Flour bread was made out of flour and soda and buttermilk mixed together, and then put on the fire to harden. Bread was made once a day in olden times. An oven pot and a frying pan were the names given to the vessels in which bread was baked. Oat bread was baked against a gridiron in front of the(continues on next page)
