   The smith has a little piece of level concrete outside his forge where he puts on shoeing on cart wheels etc. He heats the iron outside with a turf fire. He has two iron bars for carrying the heated "shoeing" on to the wheel. There is a slight hollow in the block where the nave of the wheel goes down. He sometimes shoes the horses outside in warm weather.
   The smiths in our parish have no privileges except that most of them are said to be good at bleeding horses. This is done if the horse is not feeling good or has too rich blood. The smith is supposed to be very strong, but has good muscles, because his work makes him strong.
   The people of Carrowmena always Céilidhe in the forge at night and on wet days. Here everything is talked about.
   People sometimes supply the smith with potatoes and other things because he does not have time to work all these things himself.
