About fifty years ago it was the custom for the people when they were going to the town or chapel to carry the shoes in their hands until they were coming near the town or chapel. They would then put them on and wear them until coming back. They would take off their shoes and carry them home under their arms.
There lived in Ballyban a woman named Margaret Doherty who never wore shoes until she was about to get married. She then bought a pair of shoes, and during the marriage ceremony in the chapel she had to take them off because they began to hurt her toes. I know of one woman who never wore shoes. Her name was Sally Doherty. She carried the post then. There was no post going round the Glen at this time This woman always went out to Moville and any letters that were in the Post Office she would taken the into the Glen and distribute them among the people. I also heard that there were two old women in Meenletterbale who never wore shoes and who carried turf in bags from the mountain bare-footed. Their names were Mc Laughlin and they were sisters. There was an old woman living in Glenagivney hillside locally called Paddy Mickie's Annie, her proper name was(continues on next page)- Collector
