    The scholars paid this school master one shilling and two pence per quarter. He got no money from the government. Some of these masters were very learned and could talk and write in Latin and Greek. Irish was the daily speech spoken in the parish of Clonmany and no English was taught at the hedge school.
    There were no lead pencils or exercise books as now but instead the used slaits and slate pencils. The school masters boarded in neighbouring houses and sometimes in hiding as there was a price on his head.
