- Long ago during the times of the famine the people had nothing to eat because the blight came on the potatoes when they were growing, and they all rotted. Then the people had to live on yellow meal stirabout and turnips. Some people who were able to grow wheat before the famine sold it to the people in England and they got a very good price for it, that was the cause of the famine, because they had nothing to eat. The year after the famine the people had no potatoes to sow, but the "bahlóges" and the small rubbish of the potatoes that were left. All this took place in the year 1847.
