- About 300 years ago Smuggling was extensively carried on between Rush and the Ports of France. Rolls of tobacco and casks of Brandy were brought from France to Rush and there were potatoes and cured fish sent to France. The tobacco and Brandy were landed at Rogerstown. This was loaded and taken to Rush where it was concealed in secret rooms or in cellars under the ground until it was sold. Several old houses on being knocked down to build new houses were found to contain secret rooms which the people living in the house knew nothing about. In all cases these secret rooms were found to be empty. Under the houses there were large cellars which were used for hiding the goods. Some of these cellars were said to have an underground tunnel from Rogerstown. Several fierce fights took place between the sugglers and the revenue men when bringing(continues on next page)
