- There was a great storm called the Big Wind in year 1839. It did a great deal of harm. It blew down many hay barns and it also blew away pikes of hay and straw in this district. It blew down many old houses and it also took the roofs off many thatched houses. There was a roof taken off a shed belonging to Mr. Smyth of Haystown and it was carried for about a half a mile in the air. There were many storms since but there was none of them as bad as the night of the Big Wind.
