- An old Scottish Custom I heard about an old New Years Eve custom in Scotland . It is called the first footing, which means, that the first person that calls at a friend's house after the bells ring in the New Year is let in and made welcome also and consists of whiskey to drink, the health of the house; three pieces of bread, the staff of life; some sweets, the joys of life and some salt the lasting of friendship, these are used and all enjoy a party until the small hours of the morning.
