- Long long ago, there lived in Ireland,
three huge giants. Their castle was built
on a hill so steep that no ordinary
man could climb it.
It was a custom of these giants
to let big rocks roll down the hillside
to the fields below, where they killed cattle and men. Then the giants ran
down the hill, and gathered the dead.
Soon they feasted on man and beast.
This was going on a long time, when at last, the people came to-gether in
council to try and put, an end to the
rolling giants for ever. The elders spoke
first; then the younger. Then suddenly
three youths came in and said "We will
put an end to the giants for a
hundred pounds!" "A hundred," gasped the people, "we will give ye a thousant if ye rid us of them." "Very well," replied
the youths," we start to-morrow morning."
Early next morning the youths started out
