- I live in the Townland of Larraga in the parish of Ballynakill, and barony of Leitrim. About six families live here, and the number of people is roughly calculated at about forty seven. The usual type of house here is short and low, and thatched, and the few that are slated are new and two-storeys in height. This village is in the shape of a shoulder, and from this, it got the name "Larraga", meaning a shoulder. Only two very old people live here, and they are both over eighty, but I do not think they know much Irish.
I am sure there are not as many houses in this Townland now, as formerly, and there are no ruins visible, example the remains of three houses. The people that lived in them are dead, but their descendants emigrated to America, and they all got on well. No song or poem was ever composed about this Townland.
The district is hilly in the east, and in the north west a large tract of mountain is to be seen. The middle of the village is quite level, and suitable for cultivation. Streams flow down the slopes of the hillsides, and(continues on next page)- Collector
