    suddenly awakened by a slap on the face which brought him to his senses immediately. He jumped up, but there was no sign of anyone. He was a very cross person and he searched everywhere in vain. His jaw was sore for a week afterwards. The people about here always refer to those old forts as being the abodes of the fairies, perhaps it was one of them that struck Smyth. He might have been in their way on entering or leaving the fort. Some time ago men working hear this fort in Dooras came on human bones. On examination they were found to be very old and they were interred again in the same place. Perhaps, they were the remains of some person whom the fairies had taken long ago.
