    The tenants, after some time united to fight the landlord. They demanded fair rents and security of tenure. Clanrickard, the miser, ordered that all persons, refusing to pay or unable to pay should be put out of their holdings. The farmers started what was called the "Plan of Campaign". They agreed among themselves on a fair rent, and they then offered this to the land agent. If he refused to take this money, the farmers would lodge it, until such times as he should yield.
    Clanrickard's answer to all this was wholesale evictions. Farmers who could well afford to pay their rents went out in the hope of recovering them in course of time, and under more favourable conditions. Clanrickard brought Protestant famers from the north, and these occupied the farms of the evicted tenants. These strangers were nicknamed "Planters" and frequent fights took place between them and the dispossessed. A special school was built on the Woodford Road for these new settlers. This building was, until lately used as the local golf pavillion.
    Eventually a settlement took place between landlord and tenants and most of the Planters had to go back to the north. Many of the
