- St. Martin's Day. On this day there is a cock or a sheep killed, and the blood is sprinkled on the door-posts in honour of Saint Martain.The Assumption. This is on August 15th. People go on pilgrimages to the Holy Wells. There is an old belief that a flood comes a few days before or after "Lady Day" and the farmers try to have the hay saved before this.Hallow's Eve. Hallow's Eve, or November Night is on the last night of October.Every family has some nuts and apples on that night as they are the fruit of the season. The children call it "Owing Night," as they dive for nuts, apples and money. They also prepare three saucers they put clay in one, water in another, and a ring medal or Rosary beads in the last. Then one person is blindfolded and he or she leaves his other hand on one of the saucers If he leaves his hand on the ring he will be the first to get married, if he leaves it on the beads or medal he is to be a priest, or she a nun, the water is to cross the sea, and if he leaves his hand on(continues on next page)
