    that the soil from the furrow is put up on the ridge with a spade which is bought in a shop and which cost three shillings and sixpence.
    When the stalk is about to appear over the ground the furrows are "picked" with the spade and the mould is shovelled around the tender stalks. When they are about a foot high they are sprayed inorder to prevent that fatal disease called the blight which stops the growth of the potato.
