- (continued from previous page)to tell in either Irish or English about Corthoon or the locality. The ruins of seven other homesteads can still be traced in this small townland or Corthoon. The owners of these houses had all to emigrate in 1847 owing to the evil effects of the famine.
The lower portion of the land is fairly good but the rest is dry moorland with some rushes. - A branch of the river Owenmore rises in Corthoon at the foot of the White Hill. It flows underground for about half-a-mile. In some plaecs the water bursts up through the ground but in other places the earth falls down as the water cuts a tunnel underneath.
